The Fennec Fox

Native to the vast deserts of the Sahara Desert and across North Africa, the fennec fox is the smallest species of fox in the world — but it has the largest ears relative to its body size of any canid. Those iconic ears aren’t just adorable. They help the fox dissipate heat in extreme desert temperatures and act like sensitive radar, allowing it to hear insects and small animals moving beneath the sand. Fennec foxes are nocturnal, meaning they are most active at night when the desert cools down. During the day they rest in burrows dug deep into the sand, which help protect them from the scorching heat. Their thick fur even grows on the bottoms of their feet, giving them protection from the hot desert ground and helping them move easily across loose sand. Despite living in such harsh environments, these tiny foxes thrive by feeding on insects, rodents, reptiles, and plants, getting much of the water they need directly from their food. Small, resilient, and perfectly adapted to desert life, the fennec fox is a great reminder of how wildlife evolves to survive even the toughest conditions.
